How to cancel ChatGPT, in short
Cancel where you signed up. Paid on the web? Cancel on the web. Paid through your phone's app store? Cancel there.
- Web or desktop app: open ChatGPT, click your name at the bottom left, go to Settings, then Subscription or Manage my subscription, and choose Cancel Plan.
- iPhone or iPad: iOS Settings app, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, choose ChatGPT, then Cancel Subscription.
- Android: Google Play Store, tap your profile, Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions, choose ChatGPT and cancel.
- You keep access until the end of the billing period you have already paid for.
The golden rule: cancel where you signed up
If you try ChatGPT Plus and decide it is not earning its £20 a month, cancelling takes about a minute. The only thing that catches people out is where they do it.
If you paid on the web, cancel on the web. If you paid through your phone's app store, cancel there. Trying to cancel a web subscription inside the iPhone app, or the other way round, is the single most common reason people think they have cancelled and then get charged again. The ChatGPT app and the shop that billed you are two different things, and only one of them can stop the money.
Not sure who is billing you? Check the receipt in your email. It will say OpenAI, Apple or Google Play, and that tells you exactly which of the three sets of steps below to follow.
How to cancel ChatGPT on the web or desktop app
- Sign in to ChatGPT and click your name at the bottom left of the screen.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Subscription, or Manage my subscription.
- Choose Cancel Plan and confirm.
You will usually be offered a pause or a downgrade on the way out. Both are legitimate options if you are cancelling because of cost rather than because the tool is not for you.
How to cancel ChatGPT on iPhone or iPad
- Open the iOS Settings app and tap your name at the top.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Choose ChatGPT, then Cancel Subscription and confirm.
If ChatGPT is not in that list, Apple is not billing you, so your subscription was taken out on the web or on Android instead.
How to cancel ChatGPT on Android
- Open the Google Play Store and tap your profile icon.
- Go to Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Select ChatGPT, tap Cancel subscription and confirm.
How to check the cancellation actually worked
Do not trust the confirmation screen alone
Two minutes of checking now saves an irritating email to support next month.
Confirm it in three places
- The email. A cancellation confirmation should arrive from whoever billed you. No email, no cancellation.
- The subscription screen. It should now show an end date rather than a renewal date.
- Your bank or card statement. Check on the day after the old renewal date would have fallen.
If you subscribed twice by accident, which happens more than you would think when someone tries the app and then the website, you will need to cancel in both places.
When does access stop, and can you get a refund?
You keep the paid features until the end of the billing period you have already paid for. You are not cut off the second you cancel, so there is no reason to leave it to the last day.
Refunds are discretionary rather than automatic. If you were charged unexpectedly, go to whoever took the money: OpenAI support for a web subscription, Apple or Google for a store subscription. Be prompt, be specific about the date and amount, and say what you expected to happen instead.
Before you cancel: three things worth trying first
I run AI training for a living, so I hear the reasons people cancel most weeks. Two of the three are fixable in an afternoon.
1. Check whether the problem is the briefing, not the tool
If the answers felt bland and obvious, that is what a one-line question produces. Give it a role, your own material and a clear format, then judge it. Our guide on how to use ChatGPT effectively is the fastest version of that fix.
2. Check whether you are on the wrong tool for your work
If your day is long documents and careful writing, you may simply prefer Claude, and switching is cheaper than giving up. The Claude vs ChatGPT comparison takes five minutes to read.
3. Check whether the free tier is enough for you
Plenty of people do not need a paid plan. If you use AI a few times a week for drafting and summarising, the free tier is genuinely capable, and you can come back any time. See also can I learn AI for free?
What you keep on the free tier
- Everyday drafting and rewriting. Emails, replies, descriptions and tidying up your own words.
- Summarising. Long threads, documents and notes turned into the five things that matter.
- Explaining. Jargon translated into plain English, on demand, without judgement.
- Your history. Cancelling a subscription does not delete your account or your chats.
And if you do cancel, no drama. Knowing you can leave is half of what makes it worth staying.
How to Cancel Your ChatGPT Subscription: frequently asked questions
How do I cancel my ChatGPT subscription?
Cancel where you signed up. On the web or desktop app, open ChatGPT, click your name at the bottom left, go to Settings, then Subscription or Manage my subscription, and choose Cancel Plan. If you subscribed on an iPhone or iPad, cancel through iOS Settings, your name, Subscriptions, ChatGPT. If you subscribed on Android, cancel in the Google Play Store under Subscriptions. Your access continues until the end of the current billing period.
Why was I charged again after cancelling ChatGPT?
Almost always because the cancellation happened in the wrong place. If you subscribed through the iPhone app, cancelling inside the ChatGPT website does not stop an Apple bill, and the reverse is also true. Check your Apple or Google subscriptions list, and check your email for a receipt showing who actually took the payment.
Do I lose access to ChatGPT immediately when I cancel?
No. You keep the paid features until the end of the billing period you have already paid for, then the account drops back to the free tier. You are not cut off the second you cancel.
Can I get a refund for ChatGPT?
Refunds are discretionary rather than automatic. If you were charged unexpectedly, contact OpenAI support for a web subscription, or Apple or Google for a store subscription, since the refund has to come from whoever took the money. Ask promptly and explain what happened.
What happens to my chats and files if I cancel?
Your account and its history stay in place; you simply move to the free tier with fewer features and tighter limits. Cancelling a subscription is not the same as deleting your account, which is a separate action in settings.
Is the free version of ChatGPT still worth using?
Yes. The free tier is genuinely capable for everyday drafting, rewriting, summarising and explaining, and it is enough for most people to build good habits. You can come back to a paid plan any time, and knowing you can leave is half of what makes it worth staying.
How much does ChatGPT Plus cost?
The individual paid plan has sat at around £20 a month, with business and team plans priced per user above that. Check the current price in your account before you decide, since plans and tiers change more often than most subscriptions.
Should I cancel ChatGPT or learn to use it better?
If you are cancelling because the answers were bland, that is usually a briefing problem rather than a tool problem. One-line questions produce one-line answers. Try giving it a role, your material and a clear format for a week before you decide, or spend a morning being taught properly.

Before you cancel, make sure it was the tool that failed you
Most people who cancel never learned to brief it properly. One practical morning is usually the difference between a wasted £20 a month and hours back every week.
