For learning, the free tier is genuinely fine. For serious work, the paid tiers give you the stronger models, bigger context, and, on business plans, the privacy settings that keep your data out of training. If a team is using it daily on real work, a business tier is the sensible call, mostly for the data protection rather than the bells.
Do not get paralysed by the plan choice, though. The tool is only as good as the person driving it, and a trained user on the free tier will run rings round an untrained one paying for the top plan. That is the whole argument for training over subscriptions.
ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot: does the tool matter?
A bit, but less than people hope. ChatGPT is the strong all-rounder and the best place to start. Claude is excellent for longer, careful writing and reasoning. Say you run a small consultancy and a prospect has asked for a follow-up after a good first call. Cold, that email costs you fifteen minutes and a bit of dread. You type: "Follow-up email to a prospect I met yesterday, warm and confident, remind them we discussed cutting their onboarding time, suggest a 30-minute call next week to scope it, match the tone of the email I'll paste below."
