Cancel Your AI Subscription · Part 2

How to Cancel Your Claude Subscription (Pro or Max)

Cancelling Claude Pro or Max takes about a minute, as long as you do it in the right place. The golden rule: cancel where you pay. Get that wrong and you will be charged again.

How to cancel Claude, in short

Cancel where you pay. Paid on the web? Cancel in Claude's Billing settings. Paid through your phone's app store? Cancel with Apple or Google.

  • Web or desktop app: open Claude, click your initials or name at the bottom left, choose Settings, open Billing and choose Cancel.
  • iPhone or iPad: in the Claude app tap your initials, then Billing and Manage subscription, or go to iOS Settings, your name, Subscriptions, Claude.
  • Android: in the Claude app tap your initials, then Billing and Manage subscription, or use Google Play, Payments & subscriptions, Subscriptions.
  • Cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date. You keep Pro or Max until the end of the period you have already paid for.

Thinking of cancelling because Claude is not earning its keep? It is usually a skills gap, not a tool gap. Our AI Basics Deep Dive module teaches you to get real value from Claude, ChatGPT and the other leading AI tools before you decide.

The golden rule: cancel Claude where you pay for it

If you have tried Claude Pro or Max and decided it is not worth the money, cancelling is quick. The only thing that catches people out is where they do it.

Anthropic bills web and desktop subscriptions directly. Subscriptions started inside the iPhone or Android app are usually billed by Apple or Google Play, and only the company that took the payment can stop it. Deleting the app does nothing to your bill.

Not sure who is billing you? Check the receipt in your email. It will say Anthropic, Apple or Google Play, and that tells you exactly which set of steps below to follow.

How to cancel Claude Pro or Max on the web or desktop app

  1. Sign in to Claude in a browser, or open the Claude desktop app, with the account that has the paid plan.
  2. Click your initials or name at the bottom left and choose Settings.
  3. Open Billing.
  4. Choose Cancel and follow the confirmation prompts.

If you are on Max and simply want to spend less, look at moving down to Pro rather than cancelling outright. Downgrading keeps your projects and habits intact.

How to cancel Claude on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Claude app and tap your initials in the top corner.
  2. Tap Billing, then Manage subscription, and follow the prompts.
  3. Or go straight to iOS Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose Claude and tap Cancel Subscription.

If Claude is not in Apple's list, Apple is not billing you, so your subscription was taken out on the web or on Android instead. If there is no Cancel button, it has probably already been cancelled; look for an expiry date.

How to cancel Claude on Android

  1. Open the Claude app and tap your initials in the top corner.
  2. Tap Billing, then Manage subscription.
  3. Or open the Google Play Store, tap your profile, go to Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions, select Claude and tap Cancel subscription.

Uninstalling Claude does not cancel a Google Play subscription. Always confirm the status in the Play Store's subscriptions screen.

Claude is missing from the billing page: what to check

Make sure you are signed in to the right Claude account

Check the email address on your receipt and sign in with that same account. People often have one Claude login through Google and another through email, and only one of them is paying.

Check whether it is a work seat or API billing

A personal Pro or Max plan, a Claude Team or Enterprise seat and Anthropic API Console billing are three separate things. If your company gave you Claude, the workspace owner manages the seat. API credits are managed in the Console, not in Claude's Billing page.

How to check the Claude cancellation actually worked

Do not trust the confirmation screen alone

Two minutes of checking now saves an irritating email to support next month.

Confirm it in three places

  • The email. A cancellation confirmation should arrive from whoever billed you: Anthropic, Apple or Google Play. No email, no cancellation.
  • The subscription screen. It should now show an end or expiry date rather than a renewal date.
  • Your bank or card statement. Check on the day after the old renewal date would have fallen.

If you subscribed twice by accident, once in the app and once on the web, you will need to cancel in both places.

When does Claude access stop, and can you get a refund?

You keep Pro or Max until the end of the billing period you have already paid for, then the account drops back to the free plan. Anthropic advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the next billing date to avoid another charge.

Refunds are discretionary rather than automatic. If you were charged unexpectedly, go to whoever took the money: Anthropic support for a web subscription, Apple or Google for a store subscription. Be prompt, give the date and amount, and say what you expected to happen.

Before you cancel Claude: three things worth trying first

I run AI training for a living, so I hear the reasons people cancel most weeks. Two of the three are fixable in an afternoon.

1. Check whether the problem is the briefing, not the tool

If Claude's writing felt generic, give it a specific job, your own background material and the shape of answer you want. The same five-part brief in our guide on how to use ChatGPT effectively works just as well in Claude.

2. Check whether you are on the right plan, or the right tool

Max is built for very heavy use. Most people are well served by Pro, or even the free plan. Our guide to which Claude you need sets out the differences, and the Claude vs ChatGPT comparison helps if you are wondering whether to switch instead.

3. Check whether the free plan is enough for you

If you use Claude a few times a week for drafting and summarising, the free plan may cover it. See also can I learn AI for free?

And if you do cancel, no drama. Knowing you can leave is half of what makes it worth staying.

How to Cancel Your Claude Subscription: frequently asked questions

How do I cancel my Claude subscription?

Cancel where you pay. On the web or desktop app, click your initials or name at the bottom left, choose Settings, open Billing and choose Cancel. If you subscribed in the iPhone or Android app, tap your initials, then Billing and Manage subscription, or cancel through Apple Subscriptions or Google Play. Your access continues until the end of the current billing period.

How do I cancel Claude Max?

Claude Max is cancelled in exactly the same way as Pro: Settings, Billing, Cancel on the web or desktop, or Billing then Manage subscription in the mobile app. If you only want to spend less, consider downgrading to Pro instead.

Why was I charged again after cancelling Claude?

Usually because the cancellation happened in the wrong place, or less than 24 hours before renewal. Cancelling on the web does not stop an Apple or Google Play bill. Check your receipt to see who took the payment and cancel there.

Do I lose access to Claude immediately when I cancel?

No. Anthropic says the paid plan remains available until the end of the current billing period, after which your account moves to the free plan.

Can I get a refund for Claude?

Refunds are not automatic. Contact Anthropic support for a web subscription, or Apple or Google for a store subscription, since the refund has to come from whoever took the money.

What happens to my Claude chats and projects if I cancel?

Your account and conversation history stay in place; you simply move to the free plan with lower usage limits and fewer features. Cancelling is not the same as deleting your account.

Should I cancel Claude or learn to use it better?

If you are cancelling because the output felt generic, that is usually a briefing problem. Give Claude a role, your material and a clear format for a week before you decide, or spend a morning being taught properly.
