What is Claude, and who makes it?

It comes in different sizes, from quick everyday models to heavyweight ones for the hard jobs.
You use it the same way you use any of these tools, by typing in plain English. The difference is in the output. Ask Claude for a two-page brief and you tend to get something with structure and judgement, rather than a bulleted list wearing a suit.
What is Claude best at?
Every tool has a home turf. Claude's is anywhere the quality of the writing and the soundness of the reasoning matter more than raw speed.
- Long-form writing. Reports, proposals, articles, careful client letters. Claude holds a tone and an argument over length better than most.
- Big documents. Feed it a long contract, a research paper or a year of notes and ask for the bits that matter. It reads the lot and does not flinch.
- Careful reasoning. Work through a problem, weigh options, stress-test an idea. It shows its working and lets you poke holes.
- Sounding human. With a good brief, Claude's writing needs less de-robotising than most. Which, if you have read enough AI copy, you will know is no small thing.

Claude Code is Claude aimed at building things: software, automations, whole working tools, driven in plain English. It is genuinely powerful, and it is where a lot of the "AI does the actual work" excitement is right now. It leans technical, but not as much as you would fear, and the ceiling is high.

What does Claude training cover?
Same principle as any good AI training: your real work, done faster, with the tool's strengths played to. A course typically covers prompting Claude well, getting output in your voice, working with long documents and Projects, choosing the right model for the job, and the data safety rules that keep client information where it belongs. How long before Claude training pays off?
For writing and analysis, week one. The first time Claude turns a forty-page document into a clean one-page summary you can trust, or drafts a proposal that needs a tweak rather than a rewrite, the penny drops. For Claude Code, the payoff is bigger but takes a little longer, because you are building things rather than drafting them.
As with any of these tools, practise on real jobs. Bring the actual report, the actual contract, the actual proposal. Toy examples teach you toys. Real work teaches you the tool.
What are Claude's Projects and Artifacts?
Two features worth knowing by name, because they are where a lot of Claude's day-to-day value hides. Projects let you keep everything for one job in a single place: your brand guidelines, past writing, key documents, standing instructions. Load them once and every draft after that starts from what Claude already knows about you, rather than a cold brief each time. For anyone who writes to a consistent voice or works on the same account repeatedly, it is a genuine time saver.
Artifacts are Claude's way of producing something you can actually use and edit alongside the chat: a document, a table, a working web page, a chart. Instead of a wall of text you copy out, you get a finished thing in a panel next to the conversation, which you can refine line by line. Together they turn Claude from a clever chat window into something closer to a workspace, and learning to use them well is a large part of what a good session covers.
A worked example: taming a long document
Say you are handed a forty-page supplier contract and an afternoon to make sense of it. Cold, that is a grim few hours. With Claude, you load the document and ask plain questions: "Summarise the key terms in a page", "What are the payment and termination clauses", "Flag anything unusual or one-sided". It reads the whole thing and answers in minutes, with the relevant sections quoted so you can check it. You still read the contract properly before signing, of course. But you go in knowing where to look, which is the difference between an afternoon and twenty minutes.
That pattern, feed it something long and ask for what matters, is Claude's home turf and one of the fastest wins in any session. Reports, research papers, board packs, a year of meeting notes. If it is long and dense, Claude earns its keep.
What are the most common mistakes learning Claude?
- Treating it exactly like ChatGPT. They overlap, but Claude rewards a slightly fuller brief and shines on longer, more considered tasks. Play to that.
- Not using Projects. People re-brief from scratch every time when they could load their context once and stop repeating themselves.
- Trusting without checking. Claude is careful, but it can still be confidently wrong. The final read is always yours.
- Reaching for it on the wrong jobs. For a quick factual lookup or a fast bit of everything, another tool may suit better. Knowing when not to use Claude is part of using it well.
As ever, none of this is hard once someone shows you. That is exactly what a good session front-loads, so you skip the months of trial and error.
Is Claude training right for a non-technical team?
Absolutely, and this is worth stating plainly, because the Claude Code side can make it look like a developer's tool. It is not, or not only. The writing and analysis that most businesses need require no coding at all. A marketing team, a finance team, a group of consultants: all can get enormous value from Claude for drafting, summarising and thinking through problems, without ever seeing a line of code.
