AI Search, Explained

Does AI search really rely on Reddit?

Ask anyone in marketing how to get visible in ChatGPT and there is a decent chance they will tell you to go and post on Reddit. So we checked. The short answer: Reddit matters far more than most people realise, and far less than the loudest voices claim.

Ask anyone in marketing how to get visible in ChatGPT and there is a decent chance they will tell you to go and post on Reddit. It has become one of those things people repeat without checking. So we decided to check. The short answer is that Reddit matters far more than most people realise, and far less than the loudest voices claim. The longer answer is more useful, and it changes how you should think about being found by AI at all.

The quick answer

Whether AI search relies on Reddit depends entirely on which AI you are talking to.

In January 2026, roughly 24% of Perplexity’s citations came from Reddit, Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations climbed above 5%, and Reddit accounted for just 0.1% of Gemini citations. That is a 240x gap on a single variable. So when someone says “AI search runs on Reddit,” the only honest reply is: which AI?

What the numbers actually say

Reddit’s role depends entirely on which AI you are talking to. That single fact undoes most of the advice floating around.

Perplexity is the extreme case. Roughly 24% of all its January 2026 citations came from Reddit alone, and 31% of its citations came from social media sources generally. If your buyers use Perplexity, Reddit is not a side channel. It is the channel.

ChatGPT sits somewhere in the middle. Reddit citation share climbed above 5% of all ChatGPT citations in January 2026. Meaningful, but not dominant. Wikipedia remains its most cited single source at around 7.8% of total citations.

Then there is Gemini, where the whole theory falls apart. Reddit accounted for just 0.1% of Gemini citations in that same month. Same company as Google AI Overviews, wildly different behaviour. Only 3% of Gemini citations came from social media, against 13% for AI Overviews.

How much each AI leaned on Reddit and social media (January 2026)
PlatformReddit citation shareSocial media share
Perplexity~24%~31%
ChatGPTAbove 5% (Wikipedia leads at ~7.8%)
Gemini~0.1%~3%
Google AI Overviews~13%

So when someone tells you “AI search runs on Reddit,” ask them which AI. There is a 240x gap between Perplexity and Gemini on this one variable.

Why Reddit gets cited at all

The mechanism is worth understanding, because it tells you what to do even if you never touch Reddit. Language models are looking for evidence that a real human worked something out. A thread where someone ran the thing, hit a wall, and posted what fixed it carries a signal that a polished corporate page cannot fake. Reddit’s upvote system acts as a kind of distributed editorial layer, and that structural credibility appeals to models tuned to surface experience-validated content.

The detail that should concern anyone building a brand: citation rates for positive and negative sentiment about a brand on Reddit are almost identical, around 5% and 6.1%. Models are not filtering for fairness. They are indexing raw opinion. One bad thread can shape how an AI describes you for years.

Nobody mentions this, but…

Reddit’s position is not stable, and treating it as a permanent fixture is a mistake. Conductor found Reddit’s citation share fell 23% in a single month between October and November 2025. When Reddit sued Perplexity over scraping in October 2025, Perplexity’s Reddit citations dropped 86% almost overnight, with YouTube filling the gap.

A lawsuit rewrote the citation graph in days. Anything you can lose that fast was never a foundation.

That is the whole argument against a Reddit-first strategy in one sentence. Meanwhile the ground keeps shifting. YouTube now appears in around 16% of LLM answers compared to Reddit’s 10%, though Reddit still leads on raw citation volume, and LinkedIn has quietly emerged as a serious source in its own right.

What this means if you are learning AI in the UK

If you are training your team on AI, or working out how to use these tools inside a business, the practical takeaway is not “go and post on Reddit.” It is this: understand that the AI answering your question has a personality, and that personality is made of source preferences.

Ask three tools the same question and you get three different worlds. Only 11% of domains get cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity for the same query. 71% of all cited sources appear on just one platform. That is not a bug you can optimise away. It is the shape of the thing.

For anyone actually working with these tools day to day, this changes your research habits. If you ask one AI and stop, you have not researched a question. You have sampled one platform’s taste in sources.

So, does it?

Reddit is a genuine pillar of AI search, but only on some platforms, only in some categories, and only for as long as the licensing and legal position holds. Building your visibility strategy on it alone is like building your business on a single social channel. It works until the day it does not.

The better move is to become the kind of source models want regardless of platform. Write things that show real work. Be specific. Answer the follow-up question before it gets asked. Update what you publish, because recently refreshed content averages significantly more citations than stale pages.

That works on Reddit. It also works everywhere Reddit is not.

Frequently asked questions

Does AI search rely on Reddit?

It depends entirely on which AI. Reddit matters far more than most people realise on some platforms and far less than the loudest voices claim on others. In January 2026 roughly 24% of Perplexity’s citations came from Reddit, Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations climbed above 5%, but Reddit accounted for just 0.1% of Gemini citations – a 240x gap between Perplexity and Gemini on the same variable.

Which AI cites Reddit the most?

Perplexity is the extreme case, with around 24% of its January 2026 citations coming from Reddit and 31% from social media overall. ChatGPT sits in the middle at above 5%. Gemini barely uses it at 0.1%, despite being made by Google, the same company behind AI Overviews.

Why do AI models cite Reddit?

Language models look for evidence that a real human worked something out. A thread where someone ran the thing, hit a wall and posted what fixed it carries a signal a polished corporate page cannot fake. Reddit’s upvote system acts as a distributed editorial layer, giving it structural credibility that appeals to models tuned to surface experience-validated content.

Should I build my AI visibility strategy on Reddit?

No. Reddit’s position is not stable. Its citation share fell 23% in a single month between October and November 2025, and when Reddit sued Perplexity over scraping in October 2025, Perplexity’s Reddit citations dropped 86% almost overnight. Relying on a single channel that can move that fast is like building your business on one social platform.

How do I get cited by AI search?

Become the kind of source models want regardless of platform. Write things that show real work, be specific, answer the follow-up question before it gets asked, and keep content updated – recently refreshed content averages significantly more citations than stale pages. That works on Reddit and everywhere Reddit is not.
