Is government AI training actually free?

There are three different things bundled under the free-training banner. Some of it costs you nothing, ever, and is open to everyone. Some is funded for you but paid for by the taxpayer or your employer, which means eligibility rules apply. And some are grants for adopting AI in a business, which are not courses at all. All three are worth knowing about, and none of them should cost a small business owner a penny to at least get started.

Where should I start? The AI Skills Boost and AI Skills Hub
Start here. On 28 January 2026 the government expanded a programme that had been running since June 2025 and opened it to every adult in the UK. It is called AI Skills Boost, it lives on the AI Skills Hub, and it is the single best free front door there is. What is the AI Skills Hub?
A free, government-backed website with a proper library of AI courses. The courses were built by industry partners and checked against Skills England's AI foundation skills for work benchmark, so an employer can trust what the training actually means. You register an account, follow a recommended pathway for your role or sector, and work through it at your own pace.
What courses can I do, and who made them?
Short, practical courses on using everyday AI tools to draft text, create content, analyse information and cut down admin. The content comes from partners including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, IBM, Accenture, Sage, Salesforce and Cisco, alongside 23 major technology companies in total, plus the NHS and local government. There is a dedicated pathway aimed squarely at small and medium-sized businesses.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. Finish the benchmarked foundation courses, some of which take under 20 minutes, and you earn a virtual "AI Foundations" badge you can add to your CV or LinkedIn. It signals to an employer that you can confidently use simple AI tools at work.

What other free AI courses can I access?
The Hub is the headline, but it is not the only free route. If you learn better through a college, a careers adviser or a university short course, these are all real and cost nothing to start. National Careers Service
Free, impartial careers advice and a course finder covering AI, digital and data. You can speak to a trained adviser on 0800 100 900. One thing to flag honestly: the National Careers Service is changing from 1 October 2026, so check the current pages when you go.
Free Courses for Jobs (Skills for Life)
Part of the government's Skills for Life campaign, this offers thousands of free or subsidised courses to build the digital and technical skills employers ask for, many at Level 3. Useful if you want a qualification behind the badge rather than a quick primer.
OpenLearn, FutureLearn and educator resources
The Open University's OpenLearn has free AI and data courses with no strings attached. FutureLearn carries accredited short courses you can audit for free. And if you teach, the National Centre for Computing Education offers free curriculum resources through Teach Computing.

What about Skills Bootcamps and apprenticeships?
If a 20-minute course is not enough and you want something that changes your career, this is the funded end of the offer. It is not free to everyone, but it is free to a lot of people.
Who is eligible for a Skills Bootcamp?
Skills Bootcamps are flexible courses of up to 16 weeks that now include AI literacy, data and digital marketing. To qualify you need to be 19 or over and living in England. They are fully funded for people who are unemployed or self-employed. If your employer sponsors you, the business co-funds a share, roughly 10% for smaller firms and around 30% for large ones. Most come with a guaranteed job interview on completion. Find one through the National Careers Service or the GOV.UK finder.
What about AI and digital apprenticeships?
Apprenticeships let you earn while you learn a qualification, and there are AI and data routes up to degree level. For an employer, apprenticeship training is largely government-funded, which makes it one of the cheapest ways to build genuine in-house capability over time.

Are there government grants for AI, not just courses?
Yes, but read this section with your eyes open. Grants fund AI adoption in a business rather than staff training, they are competitive, and the application windows open and close through the year. The headlines make them sound like an open cheque book. They are not. They are real money for the right project, at the right time, with a proper application behind it.
Made Smarter

Innovate UK: BridgeAI and Smart Grants
Innovate UK runs the £100 million BridgeAI programme for sectors with low AI adoption, alongside its broader Smart Grants. R&D tax relief and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships
Two quieter routes worth a look. HMRC's R&D tax relief can return money on AI work that involves genuine technical uncertainty. And a Knowledge Transfer Partnership pairs your business with a university and a graduate on a funded project, if you can commit to a longer collaboration.

Notice the last row. That is the honest limit of the free offer, and it matters. The government courses are genuinely good, and if you have not touched any of them, do. But a national badge is a baseline, not a finish line. It cannot know your team, your tools, your quotes, your Tuesday morning. That is the part that has to be taught against your actual work, and it is the part that turns "we did the training" into "we actually work differently now".
