The summary

ChatGPT's biggest changes this month are GPT-6 with Intelligent UI (7 October), always-on agents called dots (29 September), Pages and Space for shared work, audio uploads, a Microsoft Word add-in, and the planned retirement of custom GPTs.

What matters for a UK business: GPT-6 and audio uploads are useful straight away. Dots are not available to Pro users in the UK at launch, and Finances and Health are US-only. If you built your team's workflow on custom GPTs, start planning the move to plugins now.

What has ChatGPT launched in the last month?

OpenAI publishes a release note most days, so this is the shortlist of changes that affect real work. Dates are 2026 and come from OpenAI's ChatGPT release notes unless the table says otherwise.

The new ChatGPT features that matter most

GPT-6 and Intelligent UI

Ask ChatGPT to explain how an aeroplane wing creates lift and it now builds diagrams you can poke at, rather than writing three paragraphs. Per TechCrunch, the chatbot can also drop in tappable buttons, a calculator made for your task, interactive charts and editable graphs. You can dial the visuals back if you would rather have plain text. For explaining a pricing model to a client, this is a real step forward.

Dots: agents that carry on while you sleep

A dot is an always-on agent. You give it a goal, connect the apps it needs, set what it may do alone, and it works in its own cloud computer between conversations, bringing results back for review. OpenAI says it is rolling out gradually to eligible Pro and Business Premium users aged 18 and up. Pro access excludes the UK, the EEA and Switzerland at launch, and Enterprise access is a beta that is off by default.

Pages and Space

Pages turns a conversation into a shared document that colleagues can edit and comment on, each using their own ChatGPT. Space pulls Pages, files and related work into one place. Sharing a Page does not expose your private chats or memory. It is the nearest ChatGPT has come to a shared project folder.

Audio uploads and the Word add-in

Upload a meeting recording and get a transcript, a summary, structured notes and a draft follow-up email. Alongside that, the Word sidebar lets you draft, summarise and format without leaving the document. Neither is glamorous. Both save time on a Tuesday.

Custom GPTs are on the way out

OpenAI plans to retire custom GPTs and move people to plugins, which combine reusable instructions with connected apps. Your existing GPTs keep working until the retirement date for your plan. List the ones your team depends on, and who owns them.

What is good about the new ChatGPT features?

What is not so good?

Is ChatGPT best in class, and for what?

ChatGPT is best in class for breadth: one subscription that covers writing, analysis, voice, images, shared documents and agents. It is also the tool most of your staff already have on their phones, which matters more than any benchmark.

It is not the best at everything. Claude writes with a calmer voice, Copilot sits inside Microsoft 365, and Perplexity gives you sources by default. If you want the basics first, our ChatGPT for Dummies guide is a good start.

Where should UK businesses use ChatGPT?

For a UK business, the question is which of these new features you can use today, under UK availability, with your data rules intact.

Where to be careful

A sensible first test

Record the next ten minutes of a team catch-up on your phone, upload it, and ask ChatGPT for actions with owners. Then ask for a one-paragraph summary for someone who missed it. If both are good, you have found your first saving.

Learn it properly, on your own work

New features are only useful if your people know when to reach for them. Basic AI Training builds that habit across a team, and AI Basics Deep Dive goes further into prompts and workflows. Frequently asked questions about ChatGPT

What are the new features of ChatGPT in October 2026?

The main ones are GPT-6 with Intelligent UI (7 October), audio uploads (6 October), dots, Pages and Space (29 September), voice with plugins, a Microsoft Word add-in, and the planned retirement of custom GPTs.

What is ChatGPT Intelligent UI?

Intelligent UI lets ChatGPT answer with interactive visuals such as diagrams, charts, calculators and tappable buttons rather than only text. It arrived with GPT-6 on 7 October 2026, and you can reduce how many visuals you see.

What are ChatGPT dots?

Dots are always-on agents. You set a goal, connect apps and define what the dot may do alone, and it keeps working in its own cloud computer between conversations. OpenAI excludes Pro users in the UK, the EEA and Switzerland at launch.

Are custom GPTs being discontinued?

OpenAI has announced plans to retire custom GPTs and move users to plugins. Existing GPTs keep working until the retirement date for your plan, and migration guidance is promised.

Can ChatGPT summarise a recording?

Yes. Audio uploads, announced on 6 October 2026, turn recordings into transcripts, summaries, structured notes and follow-up drafts on paid plans and workspaces.

Is ChatGPT better than Claude for UK business use?

ChatGPT has the broader toolbox and Claude tends to write more naturally. Test both on a real task from your own week before you standardise on one.

What does the ChatGPT Pro 500 plan cost?

OpenAI introduced Pro 500 at $500 a month on 29 September 2026. It has the highest included usage among the Pro plans and is aimed at heavy users of ChatGPT Work and Codex.
