Claude has had its busiest month of the year. Since mid-September Anthropic has released Claude Sonnet 5.5 (28 September) and Claude Haiku 5.5 (7 October), launched Claude Dashboards and Claude Motion in beta (8 October), taken Docs, Slides and Design out of beta for every plan including Free, and put Claude inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides.
What matters for a UK business: Claude is now the strongest option here for writing, analysing documents and building finished work files. Dashboards and Motion are still beta, so test them before you rely on them. Haiku 5.5 is the one to look at if cost per task is your worry.
What has Claude launched in the last month?
Anthropic ships quickly, so the list below sticks to what has been confirmed in release notes or by Reuters. Where a detail comes from a single outside source, the table says reported. Dates are 2026.
| Date | New feature | What it does | Who gets it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 Oct | Claude Dashboards (beta) | Builds a live dashboard on your business data from a plain-language question | Paid plans |
| 8 Oct | Claude Motion (beta) | Turns text and charts into an editable animated explainer, exported as MP4 | Team and Enterprise |
| 8 Oct | Docs, Slides and Design leave beta | Create and edit documents, decks and designs inside Claude | All plans, including Free |
| 7 Oct | Claude Haiku 5.5 | Anthropic's cheapest, fastest small model, built for high-volume work | API and apps |
| 7 Oct | Monthly API credits | Credits for running your own apps and agents on the Claude Platform | Max and Team |
| 6 Oct | Claude for Google Workspace (public beta) | Add-on and connectors so Claude can create and edit in Docs, Sheets and Slides | Paid plans |

The new Claude features that matter most
Claude Dashboards: ask a question, get a live dashboard
You point Claude at your business data and customer systems, ask a question in plain English, and it builds a dashboard that stays live. Reuters describes it as available in beta on paid plans. For a small firm that has been paying someone to wrangle a monthly sales spreadsheet, this is the feature to try first. It is also a beta, so check every number against the source before it goes near a board pack.
Claude Motion: the report becomes a short film
Motion turns text and charts into an animated explainer you can edit and export as an MP4. It is in beta for Team and Enterprise customers only. A tedious quarterly update becomes ninety seconds that people might actually watch.
Docs, Slides and Design on every plan
These three left beta on 8 October and are now available on every Claude plan, Free included, subject to your account and workspace settings. One report says they switch on automatically for workspaces on 15 October unless an administrator enables them sooner. If you run Team or Enterprise, check with whoever manages your admin settings this week.
Claude inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides
The new Google Workspace add-on is in public beta, with connectors that let Claude create and edit files directly in Google's apps or from Claude itself. Approval controls and enterprise protections come with it. If your business lives in Google rather than Microsoft, this removes the daily copy and paste.
Haiku 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5: two new models
Sonnet 5.5 arrived on 28 September as a faster, cheaper partner to Opus 5.5. Haiku 5.5 followed on 7 October and is now the default Haiku model on the API, with a 1M token context window. Use the big model for judgement and the small one for the repetitive jobs. Sorting 4,000 support emails does not need your most expensive brain.
Claude Code mods and the plugin portal
For the technical people in your team, mods let you change Claude Code's behaviour with small TypeScript plugins, and the new portal makes plugins easier to publish and measure. Most UK small businesses can ignore this for now. Their developer or agency will not.
What is good about the new Claude features?
- It writes like a person. Letters, proposals and policy drafts need the least editing of any of the five tools, in my experience.
- Finished files, not chat. With Docs, Slides and Design on every plan, the output is something you can send, not something you have to rebuild.
- Good at long, dull documents. Contracts, tender packs and 80-page reports are where Claude earns its keep.
- A sensible pricing ladder. Haiku for volume, Sonnet for daily work, Opus for the hard problems.
- Governance is improving. Approval controls on the Google add-on and the expanded Cyber Verification Program show Anthropic thinking about the people who have to sign it off.
What is not so good?
- Too much is still beta. Dashboards, Motion and the Google add-on are all labelled beta. Treat them as promising, not proven.
- Plan restrictions are fiddly. Motion is Team and Enterprise only, Cowork in the cloud is Pro and Max, and Dashboards needs a paid plan. Check before you promise a colleague anything.
- Single-source details. The cloud Cowork launch and the 15 October auto-enable date come from one outside report each. Confirm them in your own admin console.
- Not the first stop for live research. For sourced, current answers, Perplexity or Gemini will often serve you better.
Is Claude best in class, and for what?
Claude is best in class for writing, reading long documents and producing finished work files. That is my view from teaching it to UK teams every week, not a benchmark table. Anthropic has not published an independent head-to-head for this month's release, and I would not trust one that came from a vendor anyway.
It is not the answer to everything. ChatGPT has the wider consumer toolbox, Copilot lives inside Microsoft 365, Gemini lives inside Google, and Perplexity wins on sourced research. Pick the tool for the job. Our Claude for Dummies guide covers the basics if you are starting from nothing.
Where should UK businesses use Claude?
Here is where I would point a UK small or mid-sized business first. The test is simple: does the task produce something you would be happy to put your name to?
| Task | Use Claude? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Client letters, proposals, tender responses | Yes | Strongest writing voice of the five, and it keeps to a house style when you give it one |
| Reading contracts, policies and long reports | Yes | Handles long documents well. Always have a person check the clauses that matter |
| Monthly sales or KPI dashboard | Try it | Dashboards is a beta. Run it alongside your current report for a month |
| Team updates as short videos | Try it | Motion is Team and Enterprise only, and still beta |
| Everyday email triage at volume | Yes, with Haiku 5.5 | Cheaper per task, which matters once you run hundreds a day |
| Live news and price checks | No | Use Perplexity or Gemini for sourced, current answers |
| Anything inside Excel, Outlook or Teams | Not first | Copilot sits closer to where the work already happens |
Where to be careful
- Data protection. Check which plan you are on before you paste in client data, and write it into your AI policy. Our AI Policy Workshop covers exactly this.
- Beta means beta. Dashboards and Motion can change or break. Do not build a client deliverable on them without a fallback.
- Checking numbers. A confident dashboard is not a correct dashboard. Reconcile it to your accounts at least once.
A sensible first test
Take one real document you wrote last month, a proposal or a policy, and ask Claude to rewrite it for a new reader. Then ask it to build the same figures into a Dashboard. Twenty minutes, one real task, and you will know whether it earns a place in your week.
Learn it properly, on your own work
Tools change monthly. Habits last. Our Basic AI Training gets a whole team to a useful working level, and AI Basics Deep Dive goes further into prompts, files and workflows. If you want the Claude-specific version, read Claude AI training in the UK, or if your developers want agents, look at Introduction to Claude Code.

Claude Motion turns text and charts into an editable animated explainer you can export as an MP4. It is in beta for Team and Enterprise customers.
Is Claude free to use?
Yes, there is a free plan, and Docs, Slides and Design are now available on it. Dashboards needs a paid plan, Motion needs Team or Enterprise, and the cloud version of Cowork is reported to be for Pro and Max.
What is the difference between Claude Haiku 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5?
