The summary

Gemini's big headline is Gemini 4 Argon, announced on 30 September, but it is restricted to select cybersecurity partners and, Google says, will reach AI Ultra subscribers first. The features most UK businesses can actually use are Connected Apps, Notebook tools, Magic Pointer and Rambler, plus new effort levels.

What matters for a UK business: from 9 October the free Gemini app drops to Flash-Lite, and AI Plus loses Pro. If your team relies on a free account, check what they can still reach. Gemini remains the natural choice if you work in Google Workspace.

What has Gemini launched in the last month?

Google's announcements are spread across the Gemini app, Workspace and Gemini Enterprise, which makes them easy to miss. Dates are 2026. Where Google gave a month rather than a day, the table says so.

The new Gemini features that matter most

Gemini 4 Argon: the model you cannot have yet

Google says Argon is its most performant model, comparable to OpenAI's Astra and Anthropic's Opus on key coding and cyber benchmarks. It was released first to select cybersecurity partners, with guardrails removed for defenders. Google's own benchmark table has it winning or tying in 13 of 18 categories. That is the vendor's table, and one analyst's reading is that the frontier did not collapse into one winner. For now, Argon is news, not a tool.

New limits and effort levels in the Gemini app

From 9 October, people without a Google AI plan can use only Flash-Lite. AI Plus subscribers get Flash-Lite and Flash but not Pro. AI Pro and Ultra keep everything, and the $19.99 a month Pro tier gets the Deep Think option. 9to5Google also reports low, medium and high effort levels coming for each model, which will trade depth against how fast you burn your allowance.

Connected Apps

Connected Apps lets Gemini carry out tasks across the apps you already use. This is Google's answer to the agent race, and for a Workspace business it is the feature to watch.

Magic Pointer and Rambler

Wiggle your cursor and ask Gemini about whatever is on your screen. Dictate a messy brain dump and Rambler turns it into structured notes you can share. Both are on-device features and neither needs a prompt. Frankly, they are the two most human ideas in the update.

Notebook tools

New Notebook tools sharpen the study and research side of Gemini, building on the NotebookLM approach of working from your own sources. Useful for staff who need to learn a regulation or a product range quickly.

What is good about the new Gemini features?

What is not so good?

Is Gemini best in class, and for what?

Gemini is best in class for Google Workspace users, multimodal work (images, audio and video) and anything where the work already lives in a Google account. It is the sensible default for a firm that never touched Microsoft 365.

It is not where I would send a nervous team for polished writing or sourced research. Claude and Perplexity are stronger there. Our Gemini for Dummies guide covers the basics.

Where should UK businesses use Gemini?

Gemini fits UK firms on Google Workspace and anyone who wants quick help with images, audio and notes.

Where to be careful

A sensible first test

Open Gemini, talk for two minutes about the week ahead using Rambler, and see if the structured notes match what you meant. Then use Magic Pointer on a messy spreadsheet and ask it to explain the odd column. Ten minutes will tell you if it fits.

Frequently asked questions about Gemini

What are the new features of Gemini in October 2026?

The main ones are Gemini 4 Argon (restricted access), Connected Apps, Notebook tools, Magic Pointer, Rambler, Nano Banana 2.1 image generation, and new model limits on the free and AI Plus plans from 9 October.

What is Gemini 4 Argon?

Argon is Google's new top-tier model, announced on 30 September 2026 and aimed at coding, legal, finance and cyber defence. It is available only to select cybersecurity partners, and Google has said AI Ultra subscribers get it first.

Can I use Gemini 4 Argon today?

Not in the normal Gemini app. Google has said access starts with select cyber partners and AI Ultra subscribers, so most people cannot use it yet.

What changes for free Gemini users on 9 October?

People without a Google AI plan are limited to the Flash-Lite model and lose access to Flash and Pro. AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash. AI Pro and Ultra see no cuts.

What are Magic Pointer and Rambler?

Magic Pointer lets you wiggle your cursor and ask Gemini about anything on screen. Rambler is smart voice dictation that turns a spoken brain dump into organised, shareable notes.

Is Gemini better than ChatGPT for UK businesses?

If you run on Google Workspace, Gemini fits better. ChatGPT has a broader consumer toolbox. Try both on real tasks, and use the same data rules for each.

Is Gemini safe for business data?

Workspace and Gemini Enterprise plans have business data controls that free personal accounts do not. Use a managed account for work and write a short AI policy.
